Η Μαρία Σάκκαρη έκανε μια τεράστια προσπάθεια ώστε να κερδίσει για δεύτερη φορά μέσα σε λίγες μέρες τη Serena Williams, προηγήθηκε με break στο τρίτο σετ της αναμέτρησης, αλλά δεν κατάφερε να διατηρήσει το προβάδισμα της με αποτέλεσμα η αντίπαλός της να περάσει στα προημιτελικά με 2-1 σετ.
Στο τρίτο σετ, που θα έκρινε την πρόκριση, η Ελληνίδα τενίστρια έφτασε μέχρι το 3-3, αλλά εκεί η Αμερικανίδα πήρε τρία σερί γκέιμ και μαζί και την πρόκριση στον επόμενο γύρο του US Open.
Αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι η επίσημη ιστοσελίδα της διοργάνωσης, χαρακτήρισε την εμφάνιση της Σάκκαρη «αντάξια της έντασης και της δύναμης που έχει η Serena».
